Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise at the age of just a young girl. Her aunt was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could devote her day to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective way to spread social activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and encouraged DuVernay to express herself through art. Although DuVernay was raised living in Compton with her family, she lived at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the civil rights marches on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama inspired her later to direct a movie about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started producing for broadcast journalism while she was still in the college. She started as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being given the task of watching the home and looking through the trash of one of members of the jury. As a result of her tasks she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism and moved into the business of publicity. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist shortly after graduating from college. She was hired in 1999 and launched her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, her agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
